2021

it can't be as crazy as 2020!

2021 Word of the Year

Picture
goals must reflect a visionary perspective, distinguishing them from concrete, measurable, time-bound objectives.
Lutrell, Capizzo, Public Relations Campaigns: An Integrated Approach

Instead of resolutions that can be checked off once completed, I have crafted ways to align myself to a mindset, according to my purpose and values. My 2021 New Year's Mindset is taking over New Year's Resolutions because a mindset allows for everyday reminders to acknowledge and surrender to; resolutions, conversely, can be dangerous if you lose the intention behind why they were created in the first place... then, all these resolutions become, simply—things to be checked off by the end of the year. 2020 has shown me that I don't want to live a life of hurry in checking off things that were meant for a much greater perspective.

A visionary mindset helps you be more intentional because there is no endpoint; these goals I put out for myself are ones I pursue because I believe in them to be ways to live a life that is true and good. You can't have goals without a visionary perspective (mindset) that serves as the compass to direct your hopes, dreams, and pursuits, as well as realign you back when you've wandered off.

"to use a metaphor, goals provide direction, while objectives describe destination"
Lutrell, Capizzo; Public Relations Campaigns: An Integrated Approach

As for objectives, my life is not a PR project or campaign and neither is your's. Objectives should be the events, decisions, and moments in our lives that become more concrete as we live in the present and respond rationally and faithfully based on the situation at hand. We aren't meant to plan out our lives in intervals and plan books because we are going to miss the gift right in front of us.

So...here's to objectives that are found by living well and living present! Happy 2021!

2021 New Year's Mindset

1. TO LIVE A QUIET LIFE
  • 1 Thessalonians 4:10-12: "But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs. and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one."

2. TO REMEMBER THAT WISDOM IS A PATH & A PERSON, NOT A SWITCH OR A DOOR
  • Wisdom: having insight on how things work, seeing the little distinctions and knowing what to do about it (Northplace). God is all-wise in that "he always chooses the best possible goals and the best possible means to meet those goals" (Grudem; Christian Beliefs)
  • Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge him and he will make straight your paths."
  • Northplace church: "a path is defined by steady, repetitious, and even mundane action." Embracing the habitual daily disciplines over the big crescendos of life because who you are and who you become is the summation of how you do the little things everyday, the little choices, your attitude, and the monotonous daily tasks and daily disciplines.

3. TO HONOR SABBATH AS A DAY EACH WEEK
  • Hebrews: 4:9-10: "So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his."
  • Leviticus 23:3: "Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation. You shall do no work. It is a Sabbath to the Lord in all your dwelling places."
  • Ezekiel 20:19-20: "I am the Lord your God; walk in my statutes, and be careful to obey my rules, and keep my Sabbath holy that they may be a sign between me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God."

4. TO TREAT MY BODY AS THE TEMPLE THAT SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF + NOURISHED + RESTED
  • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your own body."

5. TO BE A HARD WORKER, NOT A BUSY BODY
  • 2 Thessalonians 3:11: "For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work. but busybodies."
  • To be intentional, purposeful, and disciplined with my time and commitments because I know why I'm doing it.
