As you can see, the purple doesn’t end! This picture was from Connections, which is a TCU organization designed for 1st year students. We met once a week for about 8 weeks with a group we were assigned to. Here, I was able to get “connected” to many other freshmen on TCU’s campus along with leaders and upperclassmen who were there because they wanted to help facilitate our transition to school smoothly. There were many things that I got out of it-friends, figuring out my strengths via StrengthQuest, understanding my values, etc. But if I were to say the one thing that I really got out of this program, I would say that Connections helped me realize that there are people on campus that truly care about you and want to resource you with what you need to be successful throughout your years here. This place emanates of leadership and care.
On the last day, we talked about our week. It was a rough week for me, having been rejected from quite a few organizations/jobs I applied and interviewed for. I was discouraged and it was my Connections Leaders that helped me realize that sometimes it’s not you. You aren’t doing anything wrong, but instead, the organization is looking for something else. That is why it is so crucial to be yourself! Even more, now looking back on this, I take a lot of pride in how competitive TCU is. You don’t just automatically get things you want; you have to work for it, and sometimes you won’t get it, but that is okay. Because I did not get into some things I wanted to originally, it opened a whole lot of other doors for me. It’s weird to think how those doors being closed simply opened new ones that I could not be happier with. Point of story- get connected. Not just because people here are awesome, but because they can help you pursue your hopes and dreams, and relate to what you are going through. Everyday you’ll have “happys” and “crappies.” Sometimes, all it takes is a friend to make that crappy a happy :)
