about me

Oh, hey there! My name is Liv & I started this shindig.

Whether it be turning my
thoughts into words,
finance into fun, or
impact into books,
this is me.

Originally, the Shindig was my small business I began when I wrote a children’s book in middle school about a boy with autism to promote diversity and disability awareness. However, this shindig has transformed into this place right here where I get to use my creative and entrepreneurial skills to make an impact for the betterment of others.

Thanks for crashing the party!

so...still confused on what this party is about?

No worries. There’s a LOT here, so I get it.

Long story short, this site is no longer a place for my books. It's more than that—a platform where I house my blogs, stories, passions, strengths, weaknesses, books, dreams, ideas, failures, etc, etc, etc. I'll let you do the searching.

*DISCLOSURE: this shindig is all about process and progress > perfection. I'll make mistakes on it and screw up many times. Good thing this party is all about glorifying God and not myself!

about my books

shindig blog

In life, I believe one of our purposes is to love others in community.  I also believe that one of the best expressions of love is to serve others through our special talents.  Some of my passions include teaching kids, writing stories, and learning about people.  In middle school, I was able to turn these passions into a children's book about Autism called Kendall.

Never did I imagine writing a book as a kid.  Before I talk about the inspiration behind my book series, I want to thank my family, especially my mother.  I could not have done this without her support that drove this passion forward.

In fourth grade, I moved from New Jersey to Oregon. This coast to coast move was made prominent in many ways, one being the way  special education programs ran within school systems. Growing up, I always wondered why some peers left class at the beginning of the day; I would only see them return for their backpacks before the school bell released us.  I never knew that some of these students simply needed a little extra help.

When I moved to Oregon, my school offered support and curriculum to students with disabilities differently.  Specialists  worked on each student individually (or close to 1:1) outside the classroom, but also found ways to bring students back to the general education classroom (or at least setting). This change inspired me to learn more about what Autism is, and write a book for kids about it.
It is important for parents with kids who have disabilities to learn how to care for them; however, I also believe it is at equal importance for kids to be informed as well.  Through my books, I hope that readers can better understand other individuals by learning about someone who may go about life a little differently (as we all do!).

I also hope my books encourage those who identify with the characters in my books, and recognize that while it is a part of what makes them who they are, it is not their entire identity (just as how your personality is not what completely encompasses you).

Lastly, I want my books to highlight this idea that the word "disability" does not equal "limitation."  Instead, a disability is simply part of some people's lives that add to their unique and beautiful selves.  Now that is something worth celebrating!
